Zero Harm

Safe Business, Great Business!

Here at Pacific Steel Group we hold Health and Safety as the number one priority in everything we do.

We launched the 'Zero Harm - Safe Business, Great Business' campaign in 2007 and with much thanks to the work of our dedicated team of Health and Safety professionals  we have been combining the use of education, up to date resources, effective communication and staff engagement strategies to increase the general awareness to be safer in the work place, always.

It is with incentives and initiatives born under the Zero Harm campaign, such as Pacific Steel Group's 'Best Neighbourhood' competition and the weekly 'Pacific Steel Group Health and Safety Awards'  that we are fast being recognised as strong advocates for the Health and Safety plight within the industry.  Recently  the Australian Steel Institute awarded us with  'Best Site Improvement Award'  for 2008, followed by a runner up position for the same initiative and an overall runner up placement for Health and Safety Performance Excellence at the Fletcher Building Health and Safety Awards 2008 - as judged across the 20 plus Fletcher Builiding Business Units.

The real icing on the cake however has been the vast improvement in the development of a teamwork mentality across the company.  All staff have adopted the fact that safety effects everyone, from an accountant in an office to dust sweepers right in the middle of all the manufacturing plant action.  The three sites now work together to achieve Zero Harm instead of independently.  We believe it is through having a greater understanding of the company's safety dynamics and the unique working enviroment that we share, that  staff have gained a  deeper respect for their fellow co-workers.

We are proud of the glowing reputation we have built up as health and safety leaders and relish in the knowledge that when people are dealing with Pacific Steel Group health and safety is not negotiable.

Stay safe.

Farewell To An Old Friend
Sunday 17 August 2008 saw our old friend ‘Big Red’ - the red locomotive DF-1501 leave Pacific Steel.  Resident on site since 1975, NZ’s first diesel electric locomotive has stood guardian near our main gate and has become a firm icon of the steel industry and the local community alike.  Although popular with taggers and the scene of some nefarious night-time activities, the bulk of DF-1501 has endured over the years with a little assistance from Pacific Steel.
